Pediatric Speech Therapy at Theraplay Pediatrics focuses on enhancing communication and language skills in children. From improving articulation to fostering language development, our therapy sessions are designed to address a wide range of speech-related concerns. Just like in Occupational Therapy, we understand the importance of incorporating play into a child's interventions. Research consistently demonstrates that children thrive and learn best through play-based activities.
Below are just some of the concerns that we work with.
Children with articulation disorders have difficulty producing speech sounds accurately. Speech therapy helps them learn the correct placement and movement of their tongue, lips, and jaw to produce sounds correctly, improving their overall speech clarity.
Some children may experience delays in language development, including difficulties with vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Speech therapy targets these areas, helping children expand their language skills and communicate more effectively.
Stuttering is a speech fluency disorder characterized by disruptions in the normal flow of speech, such as repetitions, prolongations, or blocks of sounds or words. Speech therapy techniques aim to provide strategies to manage feelings toward stuttering, learn strategies to assist in moments of stuttering, and increase confidence in speaking.
Voice disorders can affect the quality, pitch, or volume of a child's voice, making it difficult for them to communicate effectively. Speech therapy addresses underlying vocal issues, teaches vocal hygiene techniques, and promotes vocal health and resonance.
Pragmatic language skills involve using language in social contexts. Neurodiverse affirming speech therapy helps children understand differences in communication styles, enabling them to engage more successfully in social interactions for the purposes of establishing and maintaining relationships with those around them.
Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that affects the ability to plan and coordinate the movements necessary for speech production. Speech therapy focuses on improving motor planning, coordination, and sequencing of speech sounds to enhance intelligibility.
Children with receptive language disorders have difficulty understanding language, while those with expressive language disorders struggle to express themselves verbally. Speech therapy targets both comprehension and expression, helping children develop stronger language skills overall.
Speech therapists can also address feeding difficulties in children, such as difficulty chewing or sucking safely. Feeding therapy is aimed toward improving mealtimes and providing supports to ensure safe eating and feeding for the child.
Autistic children can experience difficulties with communication, cognition, and social interaction. Neurodiverse affirming interventions tailored to their individual needs can assist with self-advocation skills, improve communication abilities to allow the child to meet their wants and needs, and foster independence.
Speech therapists play a crucial role in early intervention for infants and toddlers who are at risk for or diagnosed with communication delays or disorders. Early intervention services aim to promote language development, facilitate communication skills, and support overall developmental progress.
